What is the most important right in any democracy? In democracy political rights is highly important so far the system of government is concerned. Equally, other sorts of rights get due importance in democracy. Democracy is a system of government where the every voice counts and rights of all are equally treated.
So far the constitution is taken into consideration, right to vote or right to franchise is treated as one of the most important right. It creates path for practice of all other political rights and civil rights as well.
We in Bangladesh only practice our right to vote once in every five years unless other local government elections held. We are yet to develop a formal democratic system in our country. The only formality that is being followed is the exercise of vote for electing the ruler. Vladimir Lenin voting is selecting the person who is going to exploit me for next five years or so. We actually select our ruler, not government. Yet we dream to create a society free from exploitation, poverty and economic emancipation. That is reason we still vote for. But for how long?
We want to build a society where our civil liberty will be enjoyed and political rights will be exercised. For doing so in any democracy, the government should take some affirmative actions and in some cases need to deter from taking negative actions. For our part, the last one is the most important.
Here in most cases, government interference and imposition is the major cause of dysfunction of any government organs. For example, our EC is well empowered as per law. The relevant law of the EC is well equipped to establish people’s right to vote. But the root causes is the government interference and interruption in its functions. The dependency on government is another causes for which other bodies do not work properly. And last but not the least; the independent mind of the officers concerned is the missing point to have an empowered government organs.
But without ensuring political participation, no other rights whatsoever could not be established and materialized.
