DHAKA: A Shahbagh protester died of cardiac arrest at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BMSSU) after he fell ill due to 14-day continuous participation in the movement.
The deceased—Tariqul Islam Shanto, a cartoonist and TV drama director--died around 5.30pm Monday while chanting slogans expressing solidarity with young protestors at Shahbagh.
A leading Shahbagh protester told banglanews: “Cartoonist Tariqul Islam Shanto fell sick while chanting slogan at the protest”
Shanto was rushed to the hospital where duty doctors declared him dead, he added.
A pall of gloom descended at the scene as the news of the 39-year-old artist’s death spread and the protestors also observed one-minute silence in his memory.
