COMILLA: Bangladesh Jamaat-e Islami observed an eight-hour hartal in the district on Tuesday amid stray incidents.
The party enforced the ‘shutdown’ protesting the killing of an activist on Monday at Chouddagram upazila during hartal hours.
Pickets set fire on tyres at 21 different points under Chauddagram upazila though police took tight security measures in the areas, banglanews correspondent reports.
Chases and counter chases between cops and hartal supporters were reported in the upazila in the morning. Police opened fire four rounds of bullets at Madrasa road in upazila sadar, but no casualty was reported.
Besides, police held two Shibir men in Chauddagram upazila while they were picketing in the area.
Pickets vandalized 12 vehicles around 7:30am which were stranded on Dhaka-Chittagong highway from last night.
Meanwhile, they torched a truck in Jhagurjhuli area on the highway.
Pickets vandalized six buses at Companiganj in Muradnagar upazila around 8:00am. Jamaat-Shibir men brought out processions in different roads of the upazila.
Officer-in-Charge of Muradnagar Police Station Monirul Islam denied of any vandalism.
Though vandalism incidents were reported in the morning, no Jamaat-Shibr mab was seen on the street after 11:00am.
Shops, business organizations remained open during hartal hours.
On the other hand, district Awami League unit brought out an anti-hartal procession from in front of Pubali Chattar in the district town around 11:30pm.
On Monday, a man died and two sustained bullet wounds as police opened fire on Jamaat-Shibir men when they attacked cops at Chouddagram upazila of the district.
