DHAKA: Opposition BNP lent support to the Thursday’s hartal called by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami to press home their demands.
BNP’s Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed came up with the announcement while talking to journalists at party’s Nayapaltan central office on Wednesday evening.
Earlier in the day, Jamaat declared to observe a six-hour hartal in Dhaka and Chittagong while dawn-to-dusk elsewhere in the country on Thursday demanding release of opposition leaders including war crimes suspects.
The party made the disclosure in a press release on Wednesday afternoon.
The news release said Jamaat reduced strike by six hours for the capital following a request by the president of Supreme Court Bar Association to hold an annual programme of the SCBA.
The party declared the hartal two days after it and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir unleashed terror on police in the capital and elsewhere to mount pressure on the government to stop the war crimes trials.
