DHAKA: Main opposition BNP-led 18-party alliance enforced countrywide dawn to dusk hartal Sunday protesting fuel price-hike.
Police detained some 68 hartal supporters countrywide and at least 14 BNP-Jamaat activists were injured during hartal hours.
Banglanews correspondents report: 32 hartal supporters were held from the capital, 3 from Narayanganj, 10 from Khulna, 1 from Barisal, 6 from Dinajpur, 10 from Chandpur and 6 othere were held from Magura.
While six Jamaat activists were injured in Dinajpur, 5 BNP men in Barisal and 3 people including Shibir activists were injured in Comilla in the early hours of hartal.
Besides, the pickets locked into a fierce clash with law enforcers in city’s Panthopoth, Farmgate areas in the morning. Police fired rubber bullets to disperse the pickets.
Witnesses, police and banglanews correspondents said, the miscreants torched six vehicles in Ramna, Azimpur, Gulshan-2, Banglamotor, Arambagh, Gulistan and science lab areas.
Besides, Jamaat-Shibir activists vandalized seven vehicles in city’s Maghbazar and Badda.
The miscreants also exploded few cocktails in city in the morning and seven cocktails in Dhaka University campus and Maghbazar area on Saturday evening.
On Thursday, the government hiked fuel prices to reduce subsidy on imports of petroleum products.
In line with the new rates, the price of diesel and kerosene was hiked by Tk 7 per litre, petrol and octane by Tk 5, which will come into effect from Friday.
