DHAKA: The nationwide two-day nonstop hartal called by opposition BNP-led 18-part alliance is underway Monday amid stray violence.
In outbreaks of violence in the run-up to the countrywide hartal, at least 84 people were injured, including one bullet hit, in Dhaka, Comilla, Jhenidah, Jamalpur, Narayanganj, Bhola and Rangpur district.
Meanwhile some 167 people held in Dhaka, Comilla, Narayanganj, Kishoreganj, Khulna, Gazipur, Chittagong, Chuadanga, Thakurgaon, Noakhali, Faridpur, Rangpur and Sherpur districts during hartal hours.
Besides, hartal supporters vandalized 34 vehicles and set fire to thirteen others in different parts of the country, including the capital.
Some 35 cocktails and one petrol bomb were exploded in different parts of the country, including capital’s Mirpur, Jatrabari, Satrasta and Babubazar areas.
Additional police were deployed in different sensitive points of the city in order to avoid further untoward situation.
Besides, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel were deployed in the city on Sunday night to prevent subversive activities ahead of Monday-Tuesday’s hartal.
Opposition BNP on Saturday enforced hartal on March 18 and 19 demanding release of the party top leaders.
On March 11, police arrested over 150 BNP men, including top leaders during a two-hour raid at party’s central office in city.
The detainees included party’s joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi and Amanullah Aman and Chief Whip Zainul Abdin Farooque.
