Bangla to be official language of UN: President

DHAKA: President M Zillur Rahman Wednesday expressed hope that Bangla would be one of official languages of the United Nations (UN).

“I hope the UN would consider the matter with importance showing respect to Bangla-speaking people in the world,” he said.

The president came up with the plea while addressing a convocation programme of Dhaka University at Nabab Nawab Ali Senate Bhaban.

The president, also chancellor of the university, in this regard, urged UNESCO to play its vital role in making Bangla as one of the official languages the UN.

During the convocation, the Dhaka University conferred Doctor of Laws to Director General of UNESCO Irina Bokova.

The president said the people of Bangladesh are grateful to the UNESCO for its unique role to declare the 21st February as the International Mother Language Day.

Expressing hope, he said the UNESCO would come forward in establishing Bangla as one of the official Languages in UN.
 
Zillur Rahman said Bangladesh is one of the potential countries in South Asia with huge manpower.

At international arena, the president said the country has shown some significant progress particularly in establishing world peace and tranquility and creating global mass awareness on Climate change.

Irina Bokova spoke as the convocation speaker while the function was also addressed by Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University AAMS Arefin Siddique.

Irina Bokova, born on July 12, 1952 in Sofia, Bulgaria, is a Bulgarian diplomat and politician. She has been the Director-General of UNESCO since November 15, 2009.

She is the first woman to have been elected head of the UNESCO. She was also Minister of Foreign Affairs and Ambassador of Bulgaria.

Having graduated from the Moscow State Institute of International Relations, the University of Maryland (Washington) and the John F. Kennedy School of Government (Harvard University), in 1977 Irina Bokova joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bulgaria, where she was responsible for human rights issues.
