Bashundhara Group sues daily Jugantor

DHAKA: Senior Deputy Managing Director of Bashundhara Group, Belayet Hossain, has filed a lawsuit against the owner of the daily Jugantor Nurul Islam Babul, who is also chairman of Jamuna Group, for publishing fabricated news.
 
The case was filed in the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate court on Sunday.
 
Editor and publisher of the paper Salma Islam, Shamim Islam, son of Babul and Salma, and Executive Editor of the newspaper, Saiful Alam, were also made defendants in the case.
 
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Tasruzzaman ordered the Officer-in-Charge of Bhatara Thana of the city to submit the investigation report by April 14, 2014.
 
On October 28, 2013, a report was published on the front page of the daily Jugantor falsely claiming that Bashundhara looted property worth Tk 50,000 crore.
 
Plaintiff’s lawyer Mamun Chaudhury told the court that Bashundhara Group is a leading business conglomerate in the country and Jugantor tried to tarnish its reputation by publishing a concocted news item against the group.  
 
The plaintiff also said that since 1987, East West Properties Development Ltd has been working as a sister concern of Bashundhara Group with honesty, sincerity, efficiency and professionalism in housing sector.
 
Bashundhara Group is a reputed business house engaged in various sectors including paper, cement, steel, food, printing and shipping.
