DHAKA: Supreme Court (SC) Appellate Division upheld 13-year jail to minister Mofazzal Hossain Maya rejecting his review plea seeking acquittal in graft case.
Four-member SC bench, led by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha passed the order on Sunday.
During the last caretaker government’s crackdown on corruption in the high place, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) sued many politicians, including Maya, also an Awami League leader.
On June 13, 2007, the ACC filed the case against Maya with Sutrapur Police Station on charges of amassing huge illegal property worth Tk. 29 lakh.
On February 14, 2008, a special court established in the parliament complex area sentenced Maya to 13 years’ imprisonment and fined him Tk. 5 crore in the case.
Later, Maya filed an appeal with the HC against his conviction. On October 27, 2010, the HC acquitted him of the corruption charge. Advocate Khurshid Alam told reporters that the appeal filed by Maya has become again sub-judice following the SC order.
