DHAKA: Bloomberry Resorts, which operates Casino in Manila, has disclosed that its gaming unit has been summoned in a U.S. civil case to recover funds stolen from Bangladesh’s central bank.
In a statement to the Philippine Stock Exchange, Bloomberry said the papers had been delivered in a package on Friday, which was opened on Wednesday.
It contained a copy of a “summons in a Civil Action” issued by the Clerk of Court of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York in Civil Action No. 19-cv-983 entitled: “Bangladesh Bank v. Rizal Commercial Banking Corporation, et al.”
Bloomberry, which is one of the 17 Philippine companies and individuals named as defendants in the case, has said it will defend itself and it was a victim of the crime not complicit, reports agbrief.com
“Furthermore, the complicity and negligence of people and companies that allowed the funds to be stolen, moved and converted before they reached BRHI were the proximate causes of the loss of Bangladesh Bank,” it said.
Some $81 million was stolen by North Korean hackers in 2016 and transferred first to accounts with the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, before finding its way to the Rizal Commercial Banking Corp., where they were lost.
Some of the funds were used to buy chips that were played in the Solaire casino and junket rooms.
Earlier on February 1 this year, Bangladesh filed a lawsuit against Rizal Commercial Banking Corporation (RCBC) of Philippines, with a court of United States of America, over the heist of $81 million from Bangladesh Bank (BB) reserve.
