Jute mill workers on 96-hr strike, block road-railway

KHULNA: The workers of state-run Jute Mills in Khulna on Monday (April 15) started their 96-hour strike and put barricade on highway and railway in the city.

Earlier on April 6, angry workers declared the strike demanding implementation of 9-point demand and recommendations on regarding to hike their salaries and other facilities made by National Wage Commission in 2015.

The workers of Crescent, Platinum, Khalishpur, Daulatpur, Star, Eastern, Alim and JJI of Jashore and Carpeting Jute Mill took to the streets and brought out processions on Khulna-Jessore highway, new road crossing to Sonadanga bus road, BIDC road and put blockade on railway around 8am to press home their demand.

Tension is prevailing in the industrial area of Khulna with the movement of workers, causing untold sufferings of passengers who using the highway. 

As part of nationwide 96-hr highway and railway blockade programme, the workers put barricade on highway and railway from four hours (from 8 am to 12 pm) which disrupted the vehicular movements in the highway and railway since morning.

Earlier, the jute mill workers observed a 72-hour strike by blocking roads and rail routes to press home their nine-point demand from April 2-4.

Workers’ leaders said they had a meeting with the BJMC officials on 6 April. As first round of meeting was not fruitful, BJMC chairman held another meeting with agitating workers in the afternoon. But they could not give any decision to meet up the workers’ demands.

Later, they announced the fresh programme of 96-hour strike.
