House fire kills police constable in Habiganj

A police constable was burned to death in a fire at his house in Habiganj in the early hours of today (Dec 6).

Deceased Rubel Ahmed, who was working at Habiganj Traffic Police, hailed from Jaintapur Upazila of Sylhet. He has a wife and a child.

Officer-in-charge (OC) of Habiganj Sadar Model Police Station Golam Mortuza confirmed the matter to Banglanews.

He said: "Rubel was sleeping in a room at Siraj Mia's house in Pool No. 2 area. The fire broke out in the room at 6 am on Tuesday. As his body was burnt cent percent, he died on the spot. Later, other policemen who were in the next room went and found him dead."

The charred body was recovered and sent to Habiganj 250-bed Modern District Sadar Hospital morgue for post-mortem, the OC added.

Duty officer of Fire Service Control Room Rakibul Hasan told BSS, two firefighting units rushed there and doused the fire.

Habiganj fire station worker Atindra Kumar suspected that the fire originated from an electric short-circuit.

The tin-shed house was also completely burnt, he added.
