DHAKA: A team of 140 police members left Dhaka to join United Nations peacekeeping mission in Sudan’s restive Darfur region on Saturday.
Police headquarters public relations officer AKM Qamrul Ahsan said that the team, led by police super (SP) Sarowar Morshed Shamim, left Dhaka in an UN-hired plane to join the BANFPU-1 contingent rotation.
He said that the team is going to join other peacekeepers in Darfur as part of Bangladesh’s commitment to world peace.
According to Qamrul, over 1,300 police members are currently working in UN peacekeeping missions in countries including Congo, South Sudan, Sudan’s Darfur region, Ivory Coast, Haiti, Mali, Liberia and Somalia.
However, police department high-ups were present to see off the team.
