PM reaches Delhi to attend Suvra’s funeral

DHAKA: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina reached New Delhi on Wednesday morning to attend the funeral of Suvra Mukherjee, wife of India President Pranab Mukherjee.

A fight of Biman Bangladesh Airlines, carrying the premier and her entourage, landed at Indira Gandhi International Airport at New Delhi around 7:15am.

Indian external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj welcomed her at the airport. Senior officials of Bangladesh High Commission to India, including high commissioner Syed Muazzem Ali were also present during the time.

Press Minister at Bangladesh High Commission Enamul Haque Chowdhury confirmed the matter to banglanews over telephone.

The premier is scheduled to go to Rashtrapati Bhavan, the official home of the President of India, at New Delhi from the airport.

Earlier, a fight of Biman Bangladesh Airlines, carrying the premier and her entourage, left Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport for New Delhi at 6am. Some of cabinet members saw off her at the airport.

Her sister Sheikh Rehana, PM’s daughter Saima Wazed and Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali are accompanying her.

The premier will return Dhaka after the funeral around 6pm, said her press secretary Ihsanul Karim on Tuesday.

President Abdul Hamid and PM Hasina mourned the death of Indian first lady.

Suvra Mukherjee passed away on Tuesday morning at the age of 75.
