Minni among 6 to die for Rifat murder in Barguna

A Barguna court on Wednesday sentenced six people including Aysha Siddika Minni to death for killing Rifat Sharif in Barguna. 

Barguna District and Sessions Judge Md Asaduzzaman delivered the verdict in presence of the accused in the case.

The court also slapped Tk 50,000 fine on each convicts.

The death row convicts are- Ayesha Siddika Minni, Rakibul Hasan Rifat Faraji, Al Qayyum alias Rabbi Akon, Mohaiminul Islam Sifat, Rezwan Ali Khan Hridoy alias TikTok Hridoy, Md Hasan. 

The court, however, acquitted remaining four accused- Md Musa, Rafiul Islam Rabbi, Md Sagar and Kamrul Islam Simon- in the case.

Earlier on September 16, the same court fixed today for delivering the verdict in the case after concluding arguments for and against the 10 adult accused.

According to court sources, after the testimony of 76 witnesses against 10 adults accused in the case, the court accepted defense witness behalf of one accused. The concerned lawyers then presented arguments in the court against all the accused.

On June 26 in 2019, Rifat Sharif, 22, was brutally hacked by a group of individuals in broad daylight in Barguna town, while his wife Ayesha Siddiqua Minni was trying to save him. He died from his injuries at Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital later in the evening.

The next day, Rifat’s father filed a murder case with Barguna Sadar police station.

On September 1, police submitted two separate chargesheets against 24 people, including 10 adults and 14 juveniles.

On January 1, 2020, Md Asaduzzaman of Barguna District and Sessions Judges Court framed charges against 10 people including Ayesha Siddika Minni in the case.

On January 8, Judge Md Hafizur Rahman framed charges against 14 accused juveniles in the case.

Slain Rifat’s wife Ayesha Siddika Minni is now on bail.

In the first chargesheet for 10 adults, Md Rakibul Hasan alias Rifat Faraji was made the No one accused and Minni No seven; and in the second one for 14 minors, Md Rashidul Hasan Rishan alias Rishan Faraji, brother of Rifat Faraji, was made the No one accused.

Police, however, dropped the name of the prime accused, Sabbir Ahmed nayan alias Nayan Bond, from the first chargesheet since he was killed in a reported gunfight on July 2.
