JS New Year session begins today Parliament Bhaban

The 11th session of the 11th parliament begins at 4:00pm today (Jan 18) with Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury in the chair.

President Abdul Hamid is scheduled to deliver his speech approved by the cabinet. As per practice, the President addresses the House at the first day session of parliament each English New Year.

Parliament secretariat sources said that the President would portray the government’s various development activities through the speech.

Usually, the session becomes a long one as the lawmakers get chance to speak on the thanks giving motion on President’s speech. But this time it will be shorter due to the ongoing wave of the coronavirus pandemic, they said, adding that lawmakers having the coronavirus negative report have been requested to attend the session.

Sources said this session may last for 10 to 12 working days. Besides the general discussion, some bills will also be passed during the session.

According to the constitution, there can be a maximum of 60 days’ gap between the end of a session and the beginning of the next one.

The last session of the 11th parliament was prorogued on November 19. That was a special session arranged to mark Mujib Year, the birth centenary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Presence of some 70 to 80 lawmakers was ensured during each sitting of the last four sessions of 2020 to avert the risk of transmission.

It is known that the same system will be followed this time too. Before going into the session, the Business Advisory Committee, headed by the Speaker, will sit for a meeting to fix the duration of the session.

Prime Minister and Leader of the House Sheikh Hasina will also attend the meeting, among others.
