The ferry service on the Aricha- Kazirhat route resumed on Saturday morning, after around 20 years.
State Minister for Shipping, Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury, inaugurated the route around 11:00 am as the chief guest.
AM Naimur Rahman Durjoy MP, Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) Chairman Commodore Golam Sadeq, Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) Chairman Syed Md Tajul Islam, among others, were present at the programme.
Two ferries --Birshreshtha Matiur Rahman and Begum Rokeya—will be operated on this route.
According to the State Minister, the number of ferries would be increased if the pressure of passengers and vehicles increases in future.
The Matiur Rahman ferry left Aricha with 15 trucks.
Ferry services on the route remained suspended since 2001 due to poor navigability.
