22-day ban on hilsa fishing from October 4

The government has imposed a 22-day ban starting October 4 on catching, selling and transporting hilsa across the country to ensure safe spawning of the fish, during its peak breeding season.

A press release signed by Md Iftekhar Hossain, public relations officer at the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, issued on Wednesday in this regard.

According to the release, catching, selling and transporting of hilsa are banned for 22 days from October 4 to 25.

Hilsa fishes move from coastal areas to the major rivers like Padma and Meghna to lay eggs during the month of October.

Around 60 percent of Hilsa lay eggs in this period. For their safety breeding, the government imposes the ban every year.
