'Lockdown' again if health rules not followed: Health minister

Health and Family Welfare Minister Zahid Maleque has said that the government will have to impose lockdown if the country's Covid situation deteriorates for not following the 11-point restriction properly.

He said: "However, we do not want to go for lockdown as it harms the country. We want everyone to follow the health guidelines strictly."

The minister was speaking as the chief guest at the inauguration ceremony of the City Scan Machine and Dialysis Unit at the 250-bed General Hospital in Manikganj on Saturday (Jan 15).

The minister said: "About 4,400 people were infected by coronavirus on Friday and its rate has surpasses 13%. The number of infected patients is increasing at the rate of 1% to 3% per day and this increase is very alarming."

At present about 1% of people need ICO and if the number of patients continues to grow at this rate, there will be no space in the hospital, he added.

Deputy Commissioner Abdul Latif, Superintendent of Police Golam Azad Khan, Arshad Ullah of the 250-bed General Hospital Manikganj and others from the health sector attended the programme.
