Buses run at full capacity, trains half

Trains started carrying passengers at 50 percent capacity from today in as per government's new rules and regulations amid increasing Covid-19 infection while buses operating in capital Dhaka and other parts of the country with full capacity.

On January 10, the Cabinet Division issued 11-point directive including plying of buses and other public vehicles with half of the capacity.

On January 11, Sardar Shahadat Ali, additional director general (Operations) of Bangladesh Railway, had said that 25 percent of train tickets would be sold through mobile app and online. The other 25 percent will be sold at the ticket counters.

The inter-city as well as highway buses are seen plying with full capacity in utter disregard to the government’s directive.

Recently, the DGHS in a report termed Dhaka hotspot for corona spread followed by some other parts of the country in terms of susceptibility.

The counter masters of various transport companies claimed that they have been directed by their authorities and owners to sell tickets against all seats.

Bus staffs and passengers are reluctant to wear facemask and maintain social distancing which were mandated by the cabinet division’s notice.

Meanwhile, transport owners' association leaders earlier gave intimation that they will operate bus services with full capacity despite the government order.
