Flood situation worsens in Sylhet 

The flood situation in Sylhet worsened further during the last 24 hours with the rise of the water level in the Surma and Kushiyara rivers. 

Communication with the upazila’s and districts headquarters were snapped as various roads were submerged, Banglanews correspondent reports. 

At least fifteen wards of the city, including Sylhet Upashahar area, Sobhanighat, Chhararpar, Kalighat, Taltala, Kazirbazar, Sheikhghat, Ghasitula, Laladighi, and surrounding parts of Surma, has experienced Waterlogging.

The sufferings of the people knew no bounds as hundreds of businesses and houses were damaged in the city's flood-affected areas.

According to the district administration, 264 shelters, including 16 in the city, have been opened for the people of the flood-hit areas. People are staying in those shelters. Food has been arranged for them. 

Sylhet District Relief Officer Nurul Islam said 264 shelters have been opened in the district. People are staying in 6 of them. Besides, 149 tons of rice has been allocated for the flood victims so far. In addition, 1 thousand sacks of dry food have also been allocated.

The city observed last flood situation in 2004, when many areas of the city were flooded. Since then, waterlogging has occurred in every monsoon, but no flood situation has been such, said Nurul.

The Sylhet Water Development Board said on Tuesday evening that the water level of all rivers in Sylhet including Surma, Kushiyara, Sari and Lova is rising. The water is flowing over the danger line in different places of the river.

The flood situation is rapidly deteriorating in different downtown upazilas including Kanaighat, Gowainghat, Kompaniganj, Jaintapur, Zakiganj and Sylhet Sadar. The rest of the low-lying upazilas of the district have also been flooded.
