Padma Bridge ready for inauguration tomorrow

The historic moment of inauguration of the Padma Multipurpose Bridge has been sweeping over the people of both sides of the mighty river, especially those from 21 south and southwestern districts, as all preparations have been completed for the event tomorrow (June 25).

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will come here to inaugurate the bridge. The authorities concerned have said they have completed all necessary preparations for the inauguration ceremony to be held tomorrow.

Engineer Shafiqul Islam, project director of the Padma Multipurpose Bridge, said the bridge is now fully ready for inauguration. There is no work left now. he said.

Several sculptures and other establishments have been painted near the bridge.

Law enforcement agencies have conducted security exercise marking the grand opening of the mega structure.

Before the inauguration of the Padma Bridge, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will address the gathering at Mawa end of the bridge while she will address a public meeting at Jajira end following the inauguration of the dream bridge. 

Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges Sheikh Walid Fayez said the ambassadors of different countries in Dhaka, representatives of development partners and construction partners, political leaders, eminent intellectuals of the country, journalists and other officials have been invited to the inaugural function at the Mawa end.

Some 3,000 distinguished guests have been invited to the august gathering there.

According to sources at Awami League and district administration, after the inauguration of the Padma Bridge, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will join a public meeting in Banglabazar Ferry Ghat area.

Adequate preparations have been made to make the public meeting a memorable one. A 150 foot long and 40 foot wide stage has been constructed there.

Six watchtowers have been set up in and around the stage to ensure security while there will be more than 150 CCTV cameras in place as part of a three-tier security measures.

Organisers have expected that at least 1 million people will gather around the rally of the Prime Minister. Some 500 temporary toilets, excluding 22 for VIPs, potable water lines, three mobile hospitals, separate seating arrangements for women, 26 LED monitors for distant visitors in an area of about two square km and 500 microphones have been installed.

Besides, 20 pontoons are being constructed for the people coming through waterways.

Madaripur’s Deputy Commissioner Rahima Khatun said, “We’re expecting a gathering of over one million people. We’ve completed all necessary preparations in this regard. Now, the people here are waiting to welcome the honourable Prime Minister.”

The Bridges Division has already taken over the charge of the Padma Multipurpose Bridge from contractor company -- China Major Bridge Engineering Company Ltd.

Padma Bridge Project Director Shafiqul Islam received the handover letter from the contractor on Wednesday, Padma Bridge Executive Engineer (Main Bridge) Dewan Abdul Quader said.
