9 fishermen missing as trawler sinks in Bay

Nine fishermen went missing as a trawler capsized in the Bay of Bengal due to a strong current triggered by monsoon depression on Tuesday (August 9).

The trawler FB Nishat met the accident about 14 km away from the Payra Port around 11 pm.

The missing fishermen are Farhad, Sohail, Yasin, Yakub, Alkash, Amjad, Sharif Uddin, and Sharif and Zafar. All of their homes are in Hatia upazila of Noakhali.

Ansar Uddin Molla, President of Mahipur and Alipur Fishery Owners Association, confirmed the matter.

Shamim, the Majhi of the sunken trawler, said that their trawler overturned due to a sudden tide on Tuesday night.

He said another trawler rescued four fishermen along with him.

Later on Wednesday afternoon, two more fishermen were found in the Sundarbans area, he said, adding the remaining nine are still missing.

Payra Port Coast Guard Contingent Commander Kamal PO said that Payra Port and Nizampur Coast Guard are trying their best to find the missing fishermen.
