Tarique’s mother-in-law gets bail upon surrender

DHAKA: A Dhaka court has granted bail plea of BNP senior vice-chairman Tarique Rahman's mother-in-law Syeda Iqbal Mand Banu in a case filed by the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) for not submitting wealth statement.

The court of senior special judge of Dhaka Kamrul Hossain Molla issued bail after she has surrendered before the court on Sunday (April 23).

However, Iqbal Mand Banu could not appear before the courtroom, as she is now 75-year old woman and ill. She went to the court premises and was in her vehicle there.

Her lawyers AJ Mohammad Ali and Masud Ahmed Talukder informed the matter to the court and the court accepted the bail plea after verifying it.

Earlier on April 12, the court of Kamrul Hossain Molla issued an arrest warrant against Iqbal Mand Banu after taking cognizance of the charges. The court also fixed May 14 for the arrest report update.

According to the case statement, on January 25 in 2014, the ACC sent a notice to Iqbal Mand Banu for submitting her wealth statement.

But she then filed a writ petition with the High Court against the notice and got a stay order.

In response to an appeal by the ACC against the order, the apex court then halted it.

On January 30, the ACC deputy director RK Majumdar filed the case with Ramna Police Station in Dhaka as Iqbal Mand Banu refused to submit wealth statement.
