DHAKA: Newly elected Members of Parliament from Gaibandha-1 and Brahmanbaria-1 constituencies Barrister Shameem Haider Patwary and Badruddoza Md Farhad Hossain took oath amid formal arrangements Wednesday (March 21).

Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury administered them oath at the National Parliament Wednesday (March 21). 

Deputy Speaker Fazle Rabbi Miah, Leader of the Opposition Rowshan Ershad, Chief Whip ASM Feroz, Whip Shahiduzzman Sarker, Whip Shahab Uddin, Fakhrul Islam Imam, Md Tajul Islam Chowdhury, Nur-e-Hasna Lily Chowdhury MPs and Jatiya Mohila Sangstha Chairperson Momtaz Begum attended the function.

By-polls to the constituencies were held on March 13. 

Jatiya Party (JP) nominated candidate Barrister Shameem Haider Patwary contested the election with ‘Langol’ (plough) symbol and secured win receiving 78,926 votes in Gaibandha-1 

Awami League nominated candidate Badruddoza Md Farhad Hossain contested the election from Brahmanbaria-1 and secured win by earning 81,386 votes. 

The Gaibandha seat earlier fell vacant following the death of ruling party lawmaker Monjurul Islam Liton on December 31, 2016. Golam Mostofa Ahmed from Awami League was elected through a by-election held on March 22, 2017. The seat again fell vacant as he died in a road crash on December 19 in the same year. 

Besides, the Brahmanbaria seat fell vacant after the death of Fisheries and Livestock Minister Sayedul Hoque.
