Chattogram Port achieved its highest-ever performance in container and cargo handling, breaking all previous records, according to Port Chairman Rear Admiral SM Moniruzzaman.

The port handled 3.27 million TEUs (20-foot equivalent units) of containers and 123.99 million metric tons of cargo throughout 2024.

Compared to 2023, container handling increased by 7.42%, while cargo handling grew by 3.11%. Additionally, the port managed 3,867 vessels during the year.

Rear Admiral Moniruzzaman while speaking to media on Wednesday (January 1) confirmed that the port had significantly reduced ship waiting times at the outer anchorage to an average of one day.

The revenue earnings for 2024 totaled Tk 5,055.99 crore, marking a 21.39% growth from Tk 4,165.18 crore in the previous year. Revenue surplus rose by 37.60% to Tk 2,948.97 crore, compared to Tk 2,143.10 crore in 2023. Chattogram Port also resolved longstanding issues with hazardous cargo. Four containers carrying highly flammable sodium nitrochloride, stored for 14–15 years, were auctioned and delivered to bidders on October 27. Currently, 152 TEUs of abandoned goods are awaiting destruction, while the Customs Department has already destroyed 59 TEUs of goods between October 6 and December 23.
