Trade through Banglabandha land port stays normal

Despite India’s withdrawal of the transshipment facility, trade between Bangladesh, India, Nepal, and Bhutan through the Banglabandha land port has remained unaffected.

On April 9, India officially cancelled the transshipment facility, which had previously allowed Bangladesh to export goods to third countries using Indian land routes.

However, operations at Banglabandha port continued normally on Thursday (April 10).

According to Abul Kalam Azad, Manager of Banglabandha Land Port Limited, a total of 24 trucks carrying goods such as boulder stones, sugar molasses, and organic dye arrived from Nepal and Bhutan by noon. Meanwhile, 23 Bangladeshi trucks entered the port for export, with 21 of them heading to Nepal.

Plant Quarantine Inspector Ujjal Hossain reported that 147 metric tonnes of potatoes were exported to Nepal on Thursday alone. From January to April 10, the port has handled the export of 3,402 metric tonnes of potatoes.

Officials have urged traders not to worry, assuring that India’s decision has not disrupted ongoing import-export operations at the land port.
