Wages to be given from BGMEA

DHAKA: The unpaid wages and bonuses of Tuba Group workers will be given from the Bangladesh Garment Manufactures and Exporters Association (BGMEA), not from the Tuba factories.

BGMEA acting president SM Mannan told media in his office around 2:15pm.

He said they were trying to pay the salaries and bonuses to the workers.

Salaries for two month will be given from the BGMEA building, he added.

The BGMEA top official hoped that the workers will come there to take the wage.

He also urged the workers not to stage demonstration.

BGMEA deputy president Mohammad Shahidullah Azim said someone has been trying to intrude politics in the movement of Tuba group workers. These sorts of activities are not good for the country’s economy.

Earlier, the workers besieged the BGMEA building as per schedule on Wednesday morning. Later, police charged baton and dispersed them.

Then, the workers staged demonstration in front of the office.

Earlier on Sunday, the workers started a mass hunger strike in front of Tuba’s garment factories in city’s Badda area.

Both the government and the garment owners’ organization BGMEA talked with the worker leaders and promised to take initiatives in solving the problems.

The garment workers did not heed to the speeches of hope from the government and BGMEA.

About 1,600 workers staged demonstration for their wages and bonuses in five factories of Tuba Group.

However, additional law enforcers were deployed in the area and they are in an alert position to avert any untoward situation.
