DHAKA: Finance Minister AMA Muhith on Monday retreated from his Sunday’s stance of making the denomination of taka one and two obsolete.

He said the government is not going to make the denomination of taka one and two obsolete right now. The notes and coins of taka one and two will exist in the market. Those will be obsolete when the lowest price will stand at taka five and 10.  It’s a process.

The minister came up with the latest development while talking to reporters after attending inaugural ceremony of Global Autism and Orthopedic Conference at Milon hall of BSMMU on Monday morning.

Earlier, the minister, in his speech as chief gust at the conference, said Bangladesh has been playing a pioneer role in creating awareness about autism. Society, family even children have to aware about it.

With Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) vice-chancellor professor Dr Pran Gopal Datt in the chair,   the conference was also spoke by national professor Dr Shahela Khatun, Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA) secretary general Dr Iqbal Arsalan, among others.

Earlier on Sunday, emerging from a meeting on Value Added Tax (VAT) law amendment, Muhith said the government is going to make the denomination of taka one and two obsolete soon.

Muhith told reporters that Tk 5 would be the lowest currency of the country after making the denomination of Tk 1 and 2 obsolete. Moreover, new paper note of taka five would also be introduced at that time. The whole process would need Tk 300 crore.
