Govt cancels wheat purchase tender

DHAKA: The government cancelled a tender, third of 2013-14FY, to import 50,000 tonnes of wheat for higher prices on Wednesday.

A domestic trader made the lowest offer of US$ 286.77 per ton, including CIF liner out, in the tender.

An official of Directorate General of Food said that considering global wheat prices, the offer was high and the firm also failed to submit proper documents.

The second highest offer was $291.95, which was submitted by South Korea’s Daewoo International Corporation.

Another domestic firm secured two previous tenders to supply a total of 100,000 tonnes of wheat by offering lowest bids of $282.66 and $288.26 per tonne.

Two more tenders are in the process, he said.

The imports are part of a plan by the Directorate General of Food to ship in 850,000 tonnes of wheat in the current financial year, up from about 350,000 tonnes the previous year.

Apart from the government initiatives, private traders also import about 2.5 million tonnes of wheat to help meet local demand of 4 million tonnes a year.
