Four districts to sell lychees worth Tk 11 billion

Lychees worth Tk 1,100 crore will be sold this season by Bangladesh’s four northern districts Dinajpur, Rajshahi, Natore and Pabna.

The agriculture department of four districts confirming this information said today (May 27), that Madraji and Mozaffari lychees are ready to be taken down from the trees.

Due to corona farmers have not seen profit for two years. They're currently working hard hoping to make up for their loss.

Dinajpur District Agriculture Extension Department sources said, Madraji, Bombay and Mozaffari lychees are early varieties and are ready after 20th May. The first week of June is the harvesting time for pomegranate (Bedana) variety lychees. Nabi variety lychees harvesting time is the last week of June.

Additional Deputy Director of the Department of Agricultural Extension Khaledur Rahman said that lychees were cultivated in 5,461 hectares of land in Dinajpur district last year. The yield was 26 thousand metric tons. This time lychee has been planted in five thousand 610 hectares of land. The target has been set at 30,000 metric tons. Last year, lychee was sold for Taka 575 crore. This time it is likely to increase to Taka 617 crore.

A Lychee trader Liton said that One thousand vehicles are going from Dinajpur to different parts of the country including the capital Dhaka every day. Besides, lychees are also going to different markets of the country by courier and train.

At least Taka 10 crore is being traded every day in the lychee market. If Bombay, Bedana and China-3 lychees come to the market, this transaction will exceed to Tk 15 crore, added Liton.

Upazila Agriculture Officer Mita Sarkar said the target for sale of lychee in Ishwardi has been set at Tk 344 crore. However, if the price goes up or down, the target may be more or less.
