Students of DU, 7 colleges clash, 20 injured

A clash erupted between students of Dhaka University (DU) and those from Dhaka College and six other affiliated colleges, plunging the DU campus into a tense standoff that lasted late into the night.

At least 20 people, including journalists and pedestrians, were injured in the incident.

Dhaka Medical College Hospital Police Camp In-charge (Inspector) Md. Faruk confirmed this information today (Jan 27).

He said that the injured in the clash came to the hospital one by one until midnight. However, most of them left after receiving primary treatment at the emergency department, he added.

The injured are Dhaka University students Ripon Chowdhury (21), Irfan (20), Ashraf (20), Mehedi (23), Faisal Ahmed (22), Saad (22), Hridoy (23), Mahin (22), Ismail, Imtiaz (20), Ujjal (25), Miraj (23), Amanullah (22), Himu (23), Sabbir Hossain (24), and Dhaka College students Ibrahim (23), Rishad (23), and Rakib (24).

According to police and students, Dhaka College students attempted to enter the DU campus in a protest march around 10 pm, aiming to encircle the office of Vice-Chancellor Professor Mamun Ahmed.

They sought entry through the Liberation and Democracy Arch, triggering a strong reaction from DU students.

As news of their approach spread, DU students from various halls gathered, escalating tensions. The situation soon spiraled into violent confrontations, with both groups hurling bricks and stones at each other in the Nilkhet and New Market areas.

To restore order, police intervened by deploying 12 sound grenades and positioning water cannons and tear gas between the warring factions.

The unrest stemmed from a protest on Sunday afternoon when students from the seven colleges presented a five-point demand to Vice-Chancellor Mamun Ahmed.
