JAHANGIRNAGAR UNIVERSITY: Dr Farzana Islam, Professor of the Department of Anthropology of the university, has assumed office as the 18th Vice Chancellor of on Sunday.     

The authorities concerned of the university confirmed the matter to banglanews.  

She is the first woman VC of a public university in Bangladesh.          

On an order from JU Chancellor, also President of the country M Abdul Hamid, the Education Ministry gave the appointment to her for a period of four years.     

Earlier in the election to the JU VC panel, she bagged the highest number of votes. Professor Farzana Islam and Professor Abul Hossain of Physics Department polled 40 votes each, but Prof Farzana won the lottery.   

On the other hand, Professor Amir Hossain, Dean of Social Science Faculty, secured the third position by receiving 33 votes.
