RAJSHAHI UNIVERSITY: The authorities of Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (RUET) on Thursday declared closed the university for an indefinite period.

They also asked the students to leave their halls within 10:00am Friday.

The decision came from the RUET academic council meeting over the clash between Chhatra Shibir, Chhatra League and Police on the campus on Thursday afternoon.

RUET Vice Chancellor Professor Rafiqul Alam Beg confirmed the matter to banglanews around 8:45pm.

Earlier in the day, Chhatra Shibir activists locked into a clash with cops when they attacked Lieutenant Selim Hall unit Chhatra League activists, leaving 10 Shibir activists injured.

At the same time, Shibir activists also locked into a clash with police in Octroy Mor area, reported banglanews correspondent.

Officer-in-Charge of Motihar Thana Alamgir Hossain told banglanews, acting on tip-off, that police raided Lieutenant Selim hall as Chhatra Shibir activists were gathering for protesting the arrest of general secretary of RUET unit Chhatra Shibir Ahmed Yasir and organizing secretary Mamunur Rashid and held nine Shibir activists.

Shibir activists gathered and went to attack Selim Hall unit Chhatra League and blasted 7-8 crude bombs aiming police, he added.

“Police fired tear-gas shells and rubber bullets to disperse them. At a stage, they fled from the campus,” he added.

We have deployed a large number of police personnel to thwart any untoward situation, he added.
