DHAKA: Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid on Saturday said some 12 to 15 private universities would not be sustained as their intension is to gain profit instead of providing education.

The education minister was addressing the inaugural ceremony of ‘Apps Competition’ at Indoor Stadium at Mirpur of the capital.

Mentioning that ‘36 public and 80 private universities are running the educational activities in the country, he said, “More students are studying in private universities than public ones. But some universities are busy in business in the name of providing education.”

Despites, several warnings, they did not change their ill motive, he added.

He added: “We will not allow anyone to run university only as a tool of earning money. Some 12 to 14 such kind of universities will not be sustained. But now we are unable to do this for High Court order.”

Expressing his wish to change the traditional education system in university-level, he said, “No more universities only for teaching, delivering lectures, non-pragmatic research will be allowed.”

The government is providing crores of money to universities for research so they would have to conduct with cultivation of learning, research on new ideas.

Asia Pacific University Professor Jamilur Reza Choudhury addressed the program as chief guest.

Information and communication Technology secretary Shyam Sundor Shikdar, Prothom Alo Editor Matiur Rahman, UATL managing director AA Mubin Khan also spoke.
