9 held, 4 sent to jail over DU, JnU entry test scams

DHAKA: A total of nine people were detained on Friday on charge of their involvement in fraudulence during first year honors admission tests of Dhaka University (DU) under ‘Gha’ unit and of Jagannath University (JnU) under ‘D’ unit for the academic session 2015-16.

Of them, four were involved with the scam during DU entry test and five, including two students of JnU, with JnU entry test.

A mobile court sentenced two applicants and two JnU students for different terms of imprisonment.

Of the three applicants, two -- Mokam Uddin Gazi and Jubair -- were awarded with one month’s rigorous imprisonment each.

Another applicant, Foysal Ahmed, who was detained from Siddheswari Girls School center, was handed over to Ramna Thana.

Besides, Raqibul from Sociology Department of JnU was awarded with one-year imprisonment while Rashidul Islam from Political Science Department was awarded with two years’ imprisonment.

Executive magistrate Momtaz Begum confirmed the matter to banglanews.

On the other hand, a former student of DU and an outsider were held on Thursday night on charge of alluring applicants to supply ‘leaked’ question papers.

Besides, two applicants -- Abdus Salam and Jubaidul Islam -- of DU ‘Gha’ unit were held from Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Govt Girls High School and Motijheel Govt Girls High School centers on charge of fraudulence using mobile phones.

Confirming the matter, DU acting proctor Dr AM Amjad Ali told banglanews that the detainees were handed over to police.

No untoward incident was reported from any other exam center, he added.

As many as 90,130 students have applied against 1,465 seats in the ‘Gha’ unit of Dhaka University this year. That means, 62 applicants vied against each seat.

The 120-mark MCQ test started from 10:00am at 87 centers in the city, including 52 centers on DU campus and ended at 11:00am.

On the other hand, as many as 49,930 students have applied against 560 seats in the ‘D’ unit of Jagannath University this year.
