DHAKA: Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid said the government is planning to make one subject of technical education compulsory in all sectors of general education.

The Education Minister was addressing a function about publication of a book published jointly by Diploma Engineers Institute and Bangladesh Technical Education Board held at the auditorium of Diploma Engineers Institute in the city on Sunday (May 20). 

He said only one percent students get admission in technical education when the ruling AL government came to power. Now, it has risen to 14 percent.  It is aimed at 20 percent by 2020.

“Tremendous changes have been made in technical education for the last nine years after coalition government, led by Awami League, coming to power. Prior to Awami League regime, technical education had no aim. This regime (Ruling Awami League) has given preference to technical education.”

In a bid to entice women to technical education, one women polytechnic institute is being set up in each divisional city. Already, four has been started it activities.

Currently, there are 49 government polytechnic institutes. 34 more instates will be set up across the country.
