Age limit 35 demo at Shahbagh, 7 held

DU: Job seekers gathered at Shahbagh intersection in the capital city demanding extension of the age limit for entering the public services to 35 years. From the rally, police arrested seven people.

The rally was arranged on Saturday (April 20) afternoon under the banner of Bangladesh Sadharan Chhatra Parishad.

Seven people detained were: Harunur Rashid, joint convener of Bangladesh Sadharan Chhatra Parishad, Anisur Rahman, Shamim Reza, Binoy Biswas, Arif Hossain, Munsur Alam and Ariful Islam. 

A section of government job seekers gathered in Shahbagh from the afternoon demanding the job age of 35 years. At one stage, the police obstructed their program. At that time, seven people were arrested from there.

Organization’s Joint convener Bashirul Islam told Banglanews, "We were staging peaceful programs." But seven job seekers have been detained and taken to the police station.

When contacted, Abul Hasan, officer-in-charge of Shahbagh police station, said, "We have brought them for interrogation. They will be released once the interrogation had done.”

Meanwhile, after being obstructed by the police, the protesters took positions in front of the Raju sculpture of Dhaka University from Shahbagh intersection. 

They were chanting various slogans demanding extension of the age limit for enter level in the public services to 35 years. Many protesters are carrying placards-festoons and banners showing their demands. 

In June last year, a parliamentary committee on the public administration ministry had recommended extending the age limit to 35 for entering civil service.

Joint convener Bashirul Islam said they would continue their demonstration until their demands are met. He also demanded immediate release of the detainees.
