UGC recommends withdrawal of BSMRSTU VC

DHAKA: University Grants Commission’s probe committee has recommended withdrawal of Dr Khondoker Nasir Uddin from the post of Vice Chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology University (BSMRSTU) in Gopalganj on charge of irregularities and corruption. 

The UGC probe committee, in its report sent to the Ministry of Education, recommended withdrawal of the VC be, UGC sources said.

On September 23, the UGC formed the five-member committee to investigate the situation of BSMRSTU as students of the university have been demonstrating since September 18, demanding the resignation of the vice-chancellor for his alleged involvement in corruption and irregularities.

UGC director said the committee, formed to investigate the irregularities and corruption allegation against the VC, handed over the report to its chairman Professor Dr Kazi Shahidullah at his office Sunday (Sep 29) morning.

The committee has been asked to submit a report, after investigation all the facts about the actual events and current state of the student movement.

The committee went to the university on September 25 and 26 to conduct a thorough investigation and recorded the statements of teachers, staffers and staff of the university about the allegations if irregularities and corruption of VC Nasiruddin, the UGC said.

Students of the varsity have been staging their protest programme in front of the administrative buildings since September 21, demanding resignation of VC Prof Khondoker Md Nasiruddin bringing allegations against him of sexual harassment, nepotism in recruiting teachers.

The protesters brought 14 specific allegations against the VC Prof Nasir including sexual harassment, nepotism in recruiting teachers and employees and corruption in development projects.

Amid the ongoing protests for resignation of Vice Chancellor professor Dr Khondaker Nasir, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology University (BSMRSTU) declared a 15-day holiday starting from Sunday (September 21) on the occasion of Durga Puja.
