CUB celebrates 50yrs of Bangladesh-America ties

Canadian University of Bangladesh (CUB) has observed the 50th anniversary of bilateral relations between Bangladesh and the United States of America.

The university authority arranged a discussion programme and photo exhibition at its permanent campus at Pragati Sharani in the capital on Sunday.

International Collegiate Programming Contest (PCPC) President Dr William B Poucher graced the occasion as the chief guest.

Dr Chowdhury Nafeez Sarafat, founder and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Canadian University of Bangladesh, presided over the programme.  

Barrister Mahbubur Rahman, Chief of Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Bangladesh Police and a faculty member of the university, ASM Mainuddin Monem, Managing Director of Abdul Monem Group, Shahnul Hasan Khan, Executive Chairman of Board of Trustees of CUB, among others, were present.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof B Poucher attached importance to celebration of golden jubilee of Bangladesh and America relations due to the reasons that longstanding relations have cemented the pavement of the bilateral ties.

He was optimistic about taking the relations to a new high in the next 50 years and people of the both countries will have to play due role.

He called upon people to work for ensuring individual peace and contributing to tranquility of the globe.

Dr Chowdhury Nafeez Sarafat said he is delighted to have arranged a programme marking golden jubilee of the Bangladesh-America relations.

Citing example of Rohingya crisis, he said Bangladesh has provided the Myanmar displaced people with shelter and America has extended all-out supports in this regard.

He termed USA the largest donor to Bangladesh, adding that American embassy in Dhaka has put amicable solution to Rohingya issue on its priority list.

The USA is the largest export destinations for Bangladeshi products and one of the main sources of the Foreign Direct Investment, he said.

American companies are the first to introduce import facility of the LPG for Bangladesh, he opined.

Dr Nafeez Sarafat mentioned that USA has helped Bangladesh in dredging the rivers and extended technical support for the country’s digitisation.

The United States of America also has given modernised aircrafts to be used for carrying passengers and goods.

“We work together in the areas of environment, regional peace, educational and cultural exchange. The relations between Bangladesh and USA are getting deeper every year.”

He reiterated the leading role of Canadian University of Bangladesh to intensify bilateral ties between the both countries in the days to come.


Shahnul Hasan Khan said Bangladesh is the closest friend of the USA in the South Asia. On the other hand, the USA has extended support to Bangladesh in issues of curbing terrorism and protecting ecological balance.

He said the USA is the largest export market for Bangladeshi RMG and other items and also opportunity of higher study for Bangladeshi students.

ASM Mainuddin Monem said Bangladesh-USA relations have intensified during the Awami League regime and lauded Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for playing effective role to this effect.

Professor Dr HM Jahirul Haque, senior adviser of the Board of Trustee of the CUB, Professor ASM Sirajul Haque, treasurer of the university, heads of various departments, faculty members and students attended the programme.

The event was followed by a photo exhibition which created an opportunity for Prof B Poucher and others to know various historic events between the two countries.
