Suchitra Sen stable, surgery put off

DHAKA: A day after being moved to the ITU of Belle Vue Clinic, the legendary actress Suchitra Sen`s condition improved marginally on Monday.

Even though she was still under observation, the reclusive star who has shunned the limelight since 1978 was responding to treatment, doctors said, reports Times of India.

A cataract surgery that had been planned for Monday was, however, postponed. Doctors said it might be done later this week if she remained stable.

"Her general health parameters are absolutely fine," said Pradip Tandon, CEO of Belle Vue. "She had been admitted with a respiratory problem resulting from a lung infection. So, she has had bouts of breathlessness that necessitated oxygen support. But she is now off oxygen and her breathing has improved considerably. We need to keep her under observation for two-three days before we decide on the cataract surgery," Tandon added.

Sen has been admitted to hospital five times since 2007. Last year, the 82-year-old underwent a wrist surgery. In 2007, she suffered urinary tract infection and had to be admitted to hospital with high fever. On that occasion, she had recovered in a week.

Daughter Moon Moon Sen and her granddaughters visited her at the hospital. "None other than family members were being allowed to visit her," said a hospital source. She has been allotted a private cabin at the ITU.
