Bangladesh: First HMPV patient dies

A woman from Bhairab in Kishoreganj has died after contracting the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), marking the first known fatality from the virus in Bangladesh.

Tanzida Akter, 30, died while undergoing treatment in the Infectious Diseases Hospital in the capital.

Hospital superintendent Dr. Ariful Bashar confirmed the matter on Thursday (January 16).

While Tanzida's case is the first reported in Bangladesh, health authorities are monitoring the situation closely. The IEDCR has urged citizens to take precautions, including practicing good hygiene, avoiding crowded places, and seeking medical attention if experiencing respiratory symptoms.

Health officials are conducting investigations to determine how Tanzida contracted the virus and whether there are additional cases in the region.

Public health experts emphasize that while the virus is not new, awareness and preparedness are essential to prevent its spread.

Human Metapneumovirus is a respiratory virus known to cause mild to severe illnesses, particularly in children, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals. Symptoms range from common cold-like conditions to more serious respiratory complications such as bronchitis and pneumonia.
