Action if C-section conducted unnecessarily

DHAKA: Health and Family Welfare state minister Zahid Malek said action will be taken for performing Caesarean Section or C-Section surgery on pregnant women for delivery.

The state minister made the warning at a press conference organized on the occasion of Safe Motherhood Day at the Health Ministry conference room in secretariat on Sunday (May 27).

Zahid Malek said C-Section surgery is being performed on some 70-80 percent pregnant women for delivering babies in country’s private hospitals and clinics. It is unexpected and very concerning for safe motherhood.

Mentioning that hospitals, clinics have been directed to keep the C-Section surgery in 15-20 percent out of 1000 patients, the state minister said, “We have made a form to reduce C-section and sent the copies to private hospitals and clinics. The patient will have to fill up the form with full information so that government can oversee the matter.”

He also said a total of 34,000 community clinics and thousands of health workers provide free medicines and advise for pregnant and post natal services across the country. Maternal mortality and child mortality rates have come down significantly in last few years.
