Dengue menace: DNCC, DSCC health chiefs in HC

DHAKA: Chief health officer of Dhaka South and North City Corporations appeared before the High Court as per its order to explain measures taken to eradicate Aedes mosquitoes from the capital.

Deputy attorney general Kazi Moinul Hasan said they came to the high court on Thursday (July 23) morning. 

Earlier on Monday (July 22), a HC bench of Justice Tariq ul Hakim and Justice Md Shohrowardi summoned the duo to appear before it today. 

Meanwhile, the High Court, on July 14, directed the two Dhaka city corporations to take effective steps within 24 hours to eliminate of aedes mosquito.

It also ordered them to take preventive measures to stop the spread of dengue, chikungunya, and other similar diseases in the city.

Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) were asked to report within July 22 about the steps taken by them to prevent dengue and chikungunya and to destroy the breeding grounds of the Aedes mosquitoes.

As per order, the report was submitted to the court on Monday. But the court could not be satisfied with the report. 

Then, the two chief health officers were asked to appear before the High Court on Thursday (July 25).

Assistant attorney general Saira Firuz stood for the state.

The bench also issued a rule after a report was published in media.

The rule asked to know why inaction of the defenders to stop the spread of diseases like dengue and Chikungunya and elimination of aedes mosquito will not come under legal action and why the action will not be taken against those responsible for taking effective steps to prevent such diseases.

Two mayors of DNCC and DSCC, Chief Executive Officer of two city corporations, Health Secretary, LGRD Secretary, and Director General of Health Department have been asked to respond to the rule within a week.
