Coronavirus cases in India climbed to over 64.73 lakh as the country detected 79,476 new Covid-19 infections in a span of 24 hours. The death toll in India due to coronavirus has also crossed the grim milestone of 1 lakh as 1,069 more people succumbed to the Covid-19 infection.

With 79,476 new cases, the coronavirus tally in India, since the first case was reported, reached 64,73,545 on Saturday. So far, 1,00,842 people have lost their lives due to the Covid-19 infection, according to the health ministry.

There are 9,44,996 active cases and the recoveries have climbed to 54,27,707, the health ministry data shows.

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), a total of 7,78,50,403 samples were tested for coronavirus up to October 2. Of these, 11,32,675 samples were tested on Friday and 79,476 came back as positive for coronavirus.

ACTIVE CASES BELOW 10 LAKH FOR 12TH CONSECUTIVE DAY

India's active coronavirus caseload has remained below 10 lakh for the 12th consecutive day and the country continues to maintain its global position of having the maximum number of recovered patients. With an increase of 79,476 new Covid-19 cases, the country's active cases caseload climbed to 9,44,996 on Saturday.

The health ministry had on Saturday said that about 10 lakh people recovered from coronavirus in just 12 days.

"The last 10 lakh recoveries were added in just 12 days. With this, India continues to maintain its global position of being the country with the maximum number of recovered coronavirus patients in the world," the ministry said.

Fourteen states and union territories, including Meghalaya, Chhattisgarh, Puducherry, Himachal Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Goa and Sikkim, have less than 5,000 active cases of coronavirus, the ministry highlighted.

Earlier in the day, the health ministry said that 25 states and Union Territories have reported a fall in the number of active cases over the last week.

The ministry said that 78.07 per cent of the 81,484 new cases reported in a span of 24 hours are concentrated in 10 states and UTs -- Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, West Bengal, Delhi and Chhattisgarh.
