Muhurirchar dispute to be dissolved

AGARTALA, TRIPURA: Boundary pillars will be installed between Bangladesh and Tripura, one of the provinces of India, border with a view to resolving a 50-year dispute of Muhurirchar.

Following the decision, people of the both countries living in the frontier area have expressed content as the dispute is expected to be solved after a long time.

In this regard, in 2011, a meeting was took place between Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Indian counterpart Monmohan Singh.

According to the decision, old crematorium side of Muhurirchar will take India and rest other side will take Bangladesh.

The entire problem arose just after the Revision Settlement Survey in 1937. Around 23 years later, when more strips of land, the char, or river islands, came out from the river bed in the years - 1956, 1960, 1961 and 1966 due to heavy silting and erosion of the river`s lower course.

Subsequently, it was fully matured when the formation of the land was completed in 1974. The total area of this particular strip of the char land is 62.27 acres, based on the 2001 record, which lies in between the international border.

Out of the total stretch of 62.27 acres, 44.87 acres fall on the Indian side, and is presently under cultivation by the Indian farmers.

The remaining area, measuring 17.4 acres, closer to Bangladesh is under cultivation by Bangladeshi nationals.
