Former US President Donald Trump proposed that the United States could "take over" Gaza and redevelop it economically, turning it into "the Riviera of the Middle East."
Speaking at a joint press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House, Trump suggested removing unexploded bombs and rebuilding the Palestinian territory.
He also proposed resettling Palestinians outside Gaza during the reconstruction, despite previous rejections of similar ideas by Middle Eastern nations.
Netanyahu, the first foreign leader to visit the US during Trump's second term, described the proposal as an idea "worth paying attention to."
BBC Diplomatic Correspondent Paul Adams described Trump's remarks as "head-spinning stuff," highlighting the shock his proposals have generated.
The Palestinian ambassador to the UN responded by reaffirming that Palestinians want to return to their homes in Gaza, while Hamas dismissed Trump's plan as "absurd."
Meanwhile, US Senator Marco Rubio expressed support for the initiative, saying America is ready to "Make Gaza Beautiful Again."
