Pope Francis diagnosed with Pneumonia in both lungs

Pope Francis has been diagnosed with pneumonia affecting both lungs, with his condition described as "complex," according to a statement from the Vatican. The 88-year-old pontiff has been battling a respiratory infection for over a week and was admitted to Rome's Gemelli hospital on Friday.

A follow-up CT scan performed on the Pope revealed the onset of bilateral pneumonia, necessitating additional drug therapy, the Vatican reported. Medical evaluations, including laboratory tests and chest X-rays, indicate an ongoing "complex clinical picture." However, despite his condition, Pope Francis remains in "good spirits" and has spent his time "reading, resting, and praying."

He has also expressed his appreciation for the outpouring of support and urged people to "pray for him." Before his hospitalization, the Pope had experienced bronchitis symptoms for several days and had assigned others to deliver his prepared speeches at various engagements.

He had been scheduled to lead multiple events for the upcoming 2025 Catholic Holy Year, but all public appearances on his calendar have been canceled through Sunday. On Monday, Vatican officials confirmed that doctors adjusted the Pope's medication regimen for the second time to address what was initially diagnosed as a "polymicrobial infection of the respiratory tract."

Pope Francis has a history of lung issues, having developed pleurisy as a young man, which led to the partial removal of one lung at the age of 21. During his tenure as leader of the Roman Catholic Church, he has been hospitalized multiple times, including in March 2023 when he was treated for bronchitis over a three-day stay.
