US federal employees received an email on Saturday afternoon instructing them to submit a list of their accomplishments from the past week or face resignation, a move seen as part of the Trump administration's ongoing effort to target government workers.
The email came shortly after Elon Musk, a close Trump ally, tweeted that employees would soon receive an email asking for a summary of their weekly work. He added, "Failure to respond will be taken as a resignation."
Musk, who has been spearheading efforts to reduce government spending through deep cuts and layoffs, has been pushing for a more efficient federal workforce.
The email, which came with the subject line "What did you do last week?" from an HR address, instructed employees to provide a brief report in five bullet points by the end of Monday.
The message did not clarify if non-responses would be considered resignations.
The Office of Personnel Management (OPM), the federal government’s HR agency, confirmed the authenticity of the email, calling it part of the administration's effort to ensure accountability and efficiency within the federal workforce.
The American Federation of Government Employees, representing federal workers, condemned the message as “cruel and disrespectful,” pledging to challenge any unlawful dismissals.
Meanwhile, newly-confirmed FBI Director Kash Patel advised his team to pause responses, clarifying that the FBI would follow its own review procedures.
Earlier in the day, Trump, at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), reiterated his commitment to reducing government size and efficiency, claiming that many federal employees had been ineffective due to remote work arrangements.
