An Israeli airstrike on a residential block in Gaza's Shujayea neighborhood has left at least 35 people dead and dozens more injured, according to medical sources speaking to Al Jazeera.

The Gaza Health Ministry warned that the death toll is likely to rise as rescue teams, along with local residents, continue to search for those trapped under the debris.

The Israeli military stated that the strike targeted a senior Hamas fighter, though no name was provided, and claimed efforts were made to minimize civilian casualties.

Local resident Ayub Salim, 26, described the attack, which involved multiple missiles, saying that some victims were "torn to pieces" and that the destruction left the area shrouded in dust.

He recalled hearing the screams and panic of the people, unable to see through the devastation.

Civil defense teams and residents worked together to rescue trapped individuals, despite limited equipment due to Israel's blockade on Gaza.

Spokesperson Mahmoud Basal reported that over 60 people were wounded, but accessing those in need was made difficult by the scale of destruction and the lack of resources.

Hospitals in Gaza are facing dire shortages, with doctors at al-Ahli Arab Hospital reporting a lack of medication for treating burned victims, as well as urgent needs for blood supplies.

Medics have also struggled to reach affected areas due to road blockages caused by rubble.

The conflict has intensified since Israel resumed airstrikes on March 18, following a ceasefire with Hamas. Over 1,400 Palestinians have been killed since the resumption of the assault.

Medical sources reported at least 10 additional deaths across Gaza on Wednesday, raising the overall daily toll to at least 45.
